Helgi Jakobsson and Hildur Ósk Sigurðardóttir are second generation horticulturalists who run the facility Gufuhlíð at Reykholt in south-west Iceland.  The horticulture facility has operated since 1965, being passed down from Helgi’s parents.

The vegetables are grown in pumice and only organic methods are used to manage pests. The greenhouses are heated geothermally from the nearby district heating system at Bláskógarbyggð, which also supplies nearby homes and the public swimming pool.  Drainage from irrigation water is reused, so that the nutrients used during cultivation are not wasted and there is no impact on the surround natural ecosystem.
