Guðjón Birgisson and Sigríður Helga Karlsdóttir are horticultural farmers at Melar in Flúðir.  Both Guðjón and Sigríður grew up on farms across Iceland’s vast horticultural region, spending every summer playing and eventually working on farms in the local area. Helga and Guðjón built the first greenhouse at Melar in 1980.

A focus on natural ecology drives the horticultural production at Melar. Bees are used to pollinate the tomato plants naturally and only organic defences are used to fight against vermin. The vegetables at Melar are grown in pumice from the volcano Hekla and are watered with the same pure Icelandic drinking water that supplies the homes and schools in the Hrunamannahreppur region.
